About our calligraphy classes in Toyokawa

Where in Toyokawa are the classrooms?

In three districts: 諏訪 (Suwa) — 諏訪西教室 (Suwa-nishi classroom); 小坂井 (Kozakai) — 西小坂井教室 (Nishi-Kozakai classroom); and 国府 (Kou) / 八幡 (Yawata) — 八幡教室 (Yawata classroom).

Should I look for a “shuji” (calligraphy practice) class or a “shodo” (calligraphy) class?

Kodomo School’s “kakikata shodo” class teaches both pencil handwriting (kakikata) and brush calligraphy (shodo). If you are looking for a shuji or kakikata class, the same classroom covers both.

Can my child take soroban as well?

Yes. 西小坂井教室 (Nishi-Kozakai classroom) and 八幡教室 (Yawata classroom) also hold soroban classes at the same venue on different days of the week.

Calligraphy at Kodomo School

The power to write is the power to think.

Correct posture and stroke order, and tome, hane and harai (the stops, hooks and sweeps of each stroke). Children learn both brush writing and pencil handwriting, and the time spent carefully studying the model builds neat handwriting and a calm mind. They can also work on their school handwriting assignments. Brush-writing grade exams (kyu and dan) can be taken at the classroom they usually attend (there are no exams for pencil handwriting).
