What calligraphy builds

“Visible skills” and “invisible strengths”

We see calligraphy not only as a technique for neat handwriting, but as a “way” (dō) that builds confidence.

Visible skills

Beautiful characters and correct form

Following Japan’s national curriculum guidelines, children learn the basic “forms”: correct stroke order, character shapes, posture and how to hold the brush. Beautiful handwriting is a treasure for life.

Deep concentration

Looking closely at the model and putting their heart into each stroke. Time spent focusing on tome, hane and harai (the stops, hooks and sweeps of each stroke) builds a habit of deep focus.

Invisible strengths

Self-esteem

“I did it!” “I wrote it well!” — just like the model. That sense of achievement becomes the confidence that “if I try, I can do it.”

Calming the mind

The scent of ink and a quiet moment. The refreshed feeling after finishing. It also helps children learn to calm their own feelings.
