Meaning

What means

The Japanese word for Mount Fuji, written in kanji and kana, read Fujisan.

Fujisan is Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. Its beautiful shape has made it a symbol of Japan, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The name is usually written 富士山. Here the first part is written in hiragana as ふじ, which makes the word simpler and softer to brush.

When people write it in Japan. Fujisan is a fitting word for kakizome, the first calligraphy of the New Year, because Mount Fuji comes first in the saying about lucky first dreams of the year: first Fuji, second a hawk, third an eggplant. It also suits pieces about Japanese landscapes.

How to write it

Brush tips for

Three things to watch

  1. Write ふ and 山 wide and じ narrower, so the three characters stay balanced in size.
  2. The 2nd stroke of 山 goes straight down, then turns to the right to form the base of the character. Let it rise slightly to the right.
  3. Make the top dot of ふ from the upper left toward the lower right. At the end, point the brush tip to the lower left and lift off to a thin point.

Stroke order

Follow the vermilion stroke, frame by frame.
